Capturing Today's Moments: Creating Tomorrow's Memories

September 11, 2014
Learning something new.
The past few days I have really gotten into trying to teach myself to crochet. I have started projects in the past when I was a young girl my Mom taught me a little. I promptly forgot everything she taught me. Then as an adult my Mother-in-law tried to teach me as well. Having two young daughters didn't allow me much time to pursue the hobby so it was put aside and I forgot all I had learned once again.
When our youngest transferred to the University of Texas in Austin I decided to try one more time. To say my "trials" have been laughable is an understatement. They are horrible and hysterical all at the same time. I am not giving up though and just a short time ago I finished a very wobbly looking hot pad! It has dropped stitches. It has uneven lines. It is more than slightly askew - but I finished it and for that I am proud of myself. I am going to work on making a few more hoping to get good enough to send a few to my daughter in Austin. I am sure she will get a good laugh or at least a good giggle out of them. That is OK. We all start somewhere.

on September 13, 2014I admire your persistence. Love your color choice for yarn. Knitting always came more naturally to me than crocheting, though my Mom and her Mom were both excellent crocheters.

on September 11, 2014Congratz on your crochet adventures, Ms. Jennifer! It's late and I'm about to go to bed, but I just wanted to recommend a few books that I found really helpful- one is Crocheting in Plain English by Maggie Righetti. I found it very easy to read, it includes a few basic patterns as well as more advanced ones when you get there, and it's actually a little funny. Another is The Chicks with Sticks Guide to Crochet. This one is more of Step Two in the learning to crochet process, but it has some good tips, and some more "Advanced Beginners" patterns for later.
Happy crocheting!
