Another photo from the cemetary. Did some research on it (well the hubster did actually). The cemetary is a Texas State historial landmark. The name of it is Chisholm Chapel Cemetary. It was named in honor of Enoch P Chisholm a traveling Methodist minister who brought his family to the area in the 1860's. He donated the land for the cemtary in 1871 and was the first person buried there - in 1875. There have been over 600 people laid to rest there - the most recent being in 2003. We were shocked to hear the 600 number. The cemetary didn't seem very large. There must be quite a few unmarked gravesites. I think the saddest story about this is the one family whom in the early 1880's buried three children there all within 5 years of each other. Not one of those 3 children lived past the age of 3. I can only begin to imagine the pain those parents endured. This gravesite belongs to HV Butner born April 30, 1881 (April 30th was my mothers birthday - that is why this caught my eye). This person was one child from a family of 12 - two of whom died (this being one). This person - not sure on the gender passed away on May 3, 1908 at the age of 27 - cause unknown.

on September 3, 2008Cemeteries are fascinating, aren't they? We have an old one near my mother's house... the town pretty much built around it. Folks are buried there from the 1800's to the present day. Next time I'm there, I think I'll have a look 'round. Thanks for the inspiration!
